The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathon Stroud
Level Y
This is a great book. At first, I thought it would be a knock-off book about magic and wizards, but it was a different perspective about magic that I've never read about before. Bartimaeus is sarcastic and quick-witted, yet the book has an overall sinister and dark feeling. A five stars kind of book.

'"Come kill the killer!" he shouted. Something heavy crashed to the floor. "Betray the traitor! Rob the thief! Who wants to die with Billy Bones?"'
This is one of my favorite books. Cyrus is hilarious and really fun, but the book is still serious and really exciting. I've read it literally eight times, and I always come up with more ways to love it. It's a new and intriguing kind of fantasy that is kind of hard to explain, but easy to love.

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Level AL
This fantasy epic follows the hobbit Frodo Baggins on his journey to destroy the One Ring by throwing it into the volcano, the Cracks of Doom.
That 26 word summary does not do this amazing book series justice. The Lord of the Rings is a great book that any self-respecting fantasy lover should read. The world that it takes place in, Middle Earth, is really well developed and it makes you feel like you are actually there. The characters are great

'Then Will heard it, above the moaning of the stone flutes and the soughing of the wind through the grass, and the blood froze in his veins. It was a high-pitched, bestial howl that ulated and climbed in pitch. An inhuman sound carried to them on the wind from the throat of a monster. "It's the Kalkara," Halt said grimly."They're hunting."
This book series is addicting. I read all ten of them in less than two weeks. All of the characters are impossible not to love and the layout of the books makes it impossible to put them down.

This is another N.D. Wilson book that has a totally different angle on fantasy that is just great. I found the book a little confusing. . . but that's probably because I occasionally skim over details when I know a good part is coming up (Don't do that). Exciting and filled with characters you can't help but love, this is a great book and series.

Valiant
By Sarah McGuire
Saville despises the bolts of velvet and silk that her father loves- he's always prized them more than he's ever loved her. Yet when he's struck ill, she'll do anything to survive, even donning boys' clothes and begging a commission to sew for the king.
Piecing together a fine coat is far simpler than unknotting court gossip about an army of giants led by a man who cannot be defeated. And they're marching toward Reggen to seize the throne. But Saville knows giants are just stories, and no man is immortal.
Then she meets them, two scouts as tall as trees. She tricks them into leaving, but tales of the daring tailor's triumph quickly spin into impossible feats of giant-slaying. And mere stories won't deter the Duke and his larger-than-life army.
Now only a courageous and clever tailor girl can see beyond the rumors to save the kingdom again.

In this multilayered narrative, however, nothing is as it seems. Lyra sets out for the top of the world in search of her kidnapped playmate, Roger, bearing a rare truth-telling instrument, the alethiometer. All around her children are disappearing—victims of so-called "Gobblers"—and being used as subjects in terrible experiments that separate humans from their daemons, creatures that reflect each person's inner being. And somehow, both Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are involved.
